Wilkes University and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College have entered into articulation agreements that will help HACC graduates transfer to Wilkes to complete their bachelor’s degree. Under the new agreements, students who earn an Associate in Applied Science in early care and education or an Associate in Arts in early childhood – elementary education from HACC can transfer into the Wilkes bachelor’s degree in elementary and early childhood education as a junior.
Wilkes interim Senior Vice President and Provost Terese Wignot and HACC President John J. “Ski” Sygielski signed the agreements on Nov. 18 at HACC. It formalizes the relationship between the institutions, streamlining the admission process for interested students.
“Wilkes University has a long, successful history in educating students to meet societal needs,” said Wignot. “There is a national call for highly qualified early childhood educators. This agreement offers students a seamless pathway to a bachelor’s degree in a rewarding and growing field, while expanding our partnership with an outstanding institution like HACC.”
As part of the agreements, 60 credits earned at HACC may be applied toward the bachelor’s degree at Wilkes. The agreements support Pennsylvania’s push for creating more pathways to bachelor’s degrees for those who wish to work with young children.
“We’re always striving to provide more opportunities for our students, and we are thankful for the partnership with Wilkes University. Their small class sizes and individualized advising are similar to HACC, which gives our students even more reason to pursue this opportunity,” said Kathleen Doherty, associate provost for HACC.
Wilkes University’s elementary and early childhood education program leads to pre-kindergarten through fourth grade certification. It includes an 18-credit minor in reading education. Students study how to communicate and engage with young students while learning how to support their teaching with 21st century ideas and technology.
