Peer Tutoring Program Awarded International Certification

by Brie Friedman

Wilkes University is pleased to announce that the Office of Academic Success’s Peer Tutor program has been awarded certification as a Level 1 certified tutor training program by the internationally recognized College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).

For more than 30 years, CRLA has been a leader in learning assistance, reading and academic support programs with almost 1,300 members and over 2,000 certified training programs worldwide.

Monica O’Malley, tutor coordinator and learning specialist, worked diligently to develop a peer tutor training program with a robust curriculum that meets CRLA’s rigorous standards. Training prepares tutors to communicate clearly, ask strong questions and guide learning in meaningful ways .

“Peer tutoring empowers students to take ownership of their learning, and I am truly proud that our office is able to support students in this way,” says O’Malley.

The program successfully completed the International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) peer review process. Achieving certification means that Wilkes University has met CRLA’s high standards for tutor selection, training, direct service and evaluation as an integral part of their overall tutoring program.

“The CRLA certification raises the standard for academic support at Wilkes and enhances the experience our students have when they seek help,” says O’Malley. “Looking ahead, we will continue listening to our campus community, responding to evolving student needs and strengthening our training and support models. At its core, this program is guided by what is in the best interest of our students.”
