Wilkes University Theatre Brings Musical Version of Little Women to the Stage

by Kelly Clisham

Wilkes University Theatre invites audience members to join the March sisters for a musical retelling of Little Women at 8 p.m. on Nov. 17, 18, and 19, and 2 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20 at the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts.

Little Women is based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic American novel. The semi-autobiographical tale gives the audience a glimpse at the lives, loves and dreams of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March during the Civil War era. The musical flashes between Jo’s time in New York as an aspiring writer and family life for Marmee and her girls at their Massachusetts homestead as Mr. March serves in the war.

With a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein and music by Jason Howland, Little Women promises a theatrical event full of laughs, tears and inspiration.

The Little Women cast features Wilkes students Rylee Gaskill, Raven Wesley, Olivia Scarborough, Sammi Uggla, Aariyana Gould, Jahel Duran Diaz, Savannah Evanski, Jack Flynn, Kaiden Harris, Garrett Kitchen and Samantha Gashi. The musical is directed by Alison Morooney with musical direction by Linda Houck. Kasey Karoll serves as assistant director/choreographer and Rachel Kern serves as stage manager with Jay’na Johnson as assistant stage manager/assistant director and Alivia Serkosky as assistant stage manager.

Wilkes University Theatre will follow up with spring semester productions of Sweet Charity from Feb. 23-26, and Lord of the Flies from April 20-23.
