DESCRIPTION:Of Place and Passage: Actions and Images by Stephan Koplowitz explores the creative practice of internationally acclaimed choreographer and interdisciplinary artist Stephan Koplowitz\, whose work transforms architecture\, landscapes\, and public spaces into sites of movement\, perception\, and encounter. Bringing together photography\, video\, installation\, and archival materials\, the exhibition reveals the interconnected processes through which performance is conceived\, documented\, and remembered. \n\n\n\nRather than treating photography and moving image as records of completed performances\, Koplowitz uses them as integral choreographic tools—ways of observing\, composing\, and reimagining the relationships between bodies\, place\, and time. Across the exhibition\, visitors encounter works that trace the evolution of ideas from intimate studies of movement to ambitious\, large-scale performances unfolding across cities\, waterways\, and architectural landmarks. \n\n\n\nOrganized around themes of seeing\, repetition\, reflection\, and the choreography of public space\, Of Place and Passage invites audiences to experience movement beyond the stage. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the breadth of Koplowitz’s artistic practice while considering how performance continues to shape the ways we perceive our built and natural environments. Through image\, motion\, and spatial experience\, the exhibition encourages viewers to look closely\, move thoughtfully\, and discover choreography embedded within the everyday.

A brief reception to follow with a free wine/beer bar. \n\n\n\nRegistration appreciated. \n\n\n\nStephan Koplowitz is an award-winning director\, choreographer\, and media artist whose work spans stage\, film\, and site-specific performance. His projects explore how people perceive place\, site\, and scale while examining the intersections of natural\, social\, and cultural ecologies. Since 1984\, he has created 92 works and received 65 commissions. His numerous honors include a 2017 Rockefeller Bellagio Fellowship\, 2004 Alpert Award in the Arts\, 2003 Guggenheim Fellowship\, and a 2000 “Bessie” Award for Sustained Achievement in Choreography. In 1996\, his site-specific work Genesis Canyon won Time Out Magazine’s Best Dance Production award. Koplowitz served as Dean of CalArts’ Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance from 2006–2016. He is also the author of On Site: Methods for Creating Site-Specific Performance\, published by Oxford University Press.
