SUMMARY:Urinetown\, The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Showings\n\nThursday\, Feb. 19\, 8-10 p.m.\n\n\n\nFriday\, Feb. 20\, 8-10 p.m.\n\n\n\nSaturday\, Feb. 21\, 2-4 p.m.\n\n\n\nSaturday\, Feb. 21\, 2-4 p.m.\n\n\n\nSunday\, Feb. 21\, 2-4 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Dorothy Dickson Darte Center\n\n\n\nTicket Prices:\n\nAdults: $20\n\n\n\nSeniors & Students: $15\n\n\n\nWilkes Students\, Faculty\, Staff: Free with Wilkes ID\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this side-splitting satire\, water is scarce and Hope is even scarcer. Set in a dystopian world\, citizens must pay a fee to access the public amenities\, the only place to legally use the restroom. These facilities are run and monitored by the richest of society. In a wave of revolution\, the poorest and filthiest of these amenities becomes a number one site for major change.  \n\n\n\nWith an incisive score by Tony winner Mark Hollmann\, hilarious lyrics by Hollman and Tony winner Greg Kotis\, and a plot with thrilling twists and turns\, Urinetown is an “audacious and exhilarating” (The New York Times) take on the classic story of a ragtag group of underdogs coming together against a corrupt power. In this Tony-winning musical\, nothing is safe from criticism — capitalism\, politics\, the establishment\, the anti-establishment\, and even musical theater itself! \n\n\n\nPlease be advised that WUT’s production of Urinetown includes the use of theatrical fog and haze effects\, as well as strobe lighting. These elements may affect audience members who are sensitive to atmospheric effects or flashing lights. Viewer discretion is advised. If you have concerns or require accommodations\, please contact the box office prior to attending the performance.

His newest book\, Table for Two (2024)\, was an immediate bestseller and called “a winner” by the New York Times. Towles’s first novel\, Rules of Civility (2011)\, was also a New York Times bestseller and was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the best books of 2011. A Gentleman in Moscow (2016) was named one of the best books of 2016 by numerous outlets\, including the Washington Post and NPR. \n\n\n\nDebuting at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list\, his third novel\, The Lincoln Highway\, was one of the New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2021\, a Washington Post Best Book of the Year\, one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2021 and was #1 on Amazon’s list of the Best Books of the Year. It will be made into a movie adapted and directed by Christopher Storer for Warner Brothers. \n\n\n\nDavid Hicks\, PhD\, director of the Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Wilkes University\, will moderate a conversation with Towles. Hicks\, a first-generation college student\, earned his doctorate in American Literature at NYU and taught at Pace University in New York as well as Regis University in Denver\, where he co-founded and co-directed the MFA in Creative Writing. \n\n\n\nIn his forties he shifted his work from academic to creative\, first publishing short stories\, then collecting and rearranging them as a novel-in-stories\, White Plains\, published by Conundrum Press (now Bower House Books) in 2017. SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Why Am I Sad by Dana Stirling | Formal/Informal: Innovations in Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Why Am I Sad by Dana Stirling and Formal/Informal: Innovations in Portraiture will be on display from March 24 to May 15\, 2026. \n\n\n\nWhy Am I Sad by Dana Stirling explores mental health and depression through still life photography. An estimated 280 million people worldwide live with depression; this exhibition shares the personal narrative of one of them—Dana Stirling. As a child of immigrants\, she grew up navigating dual identities\, often feeling like an outsider in both cultures. This sense of displacement fostered deep isolation and emotional unrest. Photography became her refuge\, a way to express what words could not. \n\n\n\nFormal/ Informal: Innovations in Portraiture from the Syracuse University Art Museum explores the definition of portraiture\, comparing that formal term to the compositions created by photographers. During the 19th century\, formal studio or posed portraits flourished as a way to capture a vision of a person\, whether known or unknown to the photographer. The artist\, in turn\, utilized their craft to tell the story of the sitter. Images from the 20th and 21st centuries evolved into both formal and informal views of people\, as their environs began to play as much of a role in their portrait as their faces did. The result is a collection of portraits that could be serious\, playful\, have social or political ramifications\, or whose purpose is to celebrate the people\, famous or infamous\, ultimately telling the story of our society as a whole.
