Africana Studies Food & Community Event: Freedom Soup, A Haitian Celebration of the New Year

January 20, 2026 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for a warming bowl of history and hope! Discover soup joumou, Haiti’s cherished pumpkin soup that embodies the spirit of liberation. Once forbidden to enslaved people, this rich, savory soup became the first meal Haitians shared as free people on January 1, 1804—the day Haiti declared independence as the world’s first Black republic. Today, soup joumou remains a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and renewal. Every New Year’s Day, Haitian families gather to prepare and share this special dish, honoring their ancestors’ triumph while welcoming prosperity for the year ahead.

Come celebrate this meaningful tradition with the AFS community! We’ll share stories, savor an abundance of authentic soup joumou, and celebrate new beginnings together. All are welcome to partake in this tradition of hope and remembrance. The soup is meatless with a beef option. No pork is used in the recipe.
