Club Day
Student Government and the Office of Student Life and Success showcased activities on campus on Sept. 5, with a student favorite: Club Day! Students lined the lawn with posters, swag and chatter to catch up with old friends and potential recruits (aka members). Clubs give students a chance to explore interests, connect with others and develop skills to enrich their personal and academic lives.
“There was tremendous enthusiasm at Club Day this year providing opportunities for students to sign up for clubs while meeting new members of our student community,” said Mark Allen, associate vice president for student life and success. He credits the efforts of university staff, students, faculty and most importantly, student government. “They did a fantastic job in organizing our many diverse clubs and organizations.”
Nolee Ana Grabowski, student government president, said, “In the planning of Club Day, I remember reaching 66 registered clubs,” noting that it was an increase from the previous year’s 62. By the end of registration, there were 74 clubs involved. “It’s an incredible feeling,” said Grabowski.
Colonel Kick-off
The Colonel Kick-off on Sept. 12 launched our Colonels into a new school year with t-shirt giveaways, choir, band, dance team and cheerleading performances. Athletes paraded through the crowd as they represented their teams and shared in the well wishes for a great season. The Colonels football team also showed off the Mayor’s Cup trophy, which returned to campus following a victory against cross-town rival, King’s College.
Sausage Sizzle
The Third Annual Sausage Sizzle followed in the Weckesser Hall parking lot. President Greg Cant and First Lady Angela Cant served up an Australian classic: sausages on bread with fixings of peppers, onions, seasoning and condiments. Iced tea and lemonade were the perfect sunny day complement to the delicious barbecue. The Cant sausage-serving duo helped our community embrace traditions, while bringing students, faculty and staff together for outdoor dining and conversation.
The organizers and attendees of Club Day, the Colonel Kick-Off and the Sausage Sizzle celebrated the Wilkes spirit on the Fenner Quadrangle to start the fall semester, with many more events to come throughout the year.
