High School Students to Explore a Future in Pharmacy at RxExperience Camp

Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Students

When imagining what it’s like to be a pharmacist, a familiar image often comes to mind: a person in a white coat behind the counter filling prescriptions. The reality is so much more.

For high school students who may be considering a future in the pharmacy field, RxExperience at Wilkes offers a deep dive into topics that range from what pharmacy school is like to possible career options that go well beyond prescription counters.

Offered by the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, RxExperience gives students a four-day experience in pharmacy through online sessions held on Wednesday evenings (Feb. 25, Mar. 4, Mar. 11 and Mar. 18) from 6-8 p.m. on Microsoft Teams.

A Different Kind of Pharmacy Camp

RxExperience takes a hands-on approach to learning about pharmacy even though it’s delivered in a virtual format. Participants will receive a kit with everything needed for interactive lab activities they can perform at home, allowing students to engage directly with things they might learn in the classroom. Plus, they’ll have the opportunity to engage with faculty and peers in online sessions that blend education with practical experience.

The camp tackles the questions most prospective pharmacy students actually have, like:

  • What does a day in pharmacy school look like?
  • What skills do you need to develop?
  • How competitive is admission, and what can you do now to prepare?

Beyond academics, participants can hear directly about the variety of career trajectories available to pharmacists — something many high school students don’t realize exists. From clinical roles in hospitals to research positions developing new medications, RxExperience will explore it all.

The schedule is also designed with busy students in mind. Two-hour evening sessions mean attendees won’t miss school, and the virtual format eliminates travel concerns.

A Chance to Explore the Field of Pharmacy

While RxExperience certainly provides practical insights into pharmacy careers, it also offers something harder to quantify: the chance to see themselves in this field. Meeting with pharmacy faculty, engaging with material in a hands-on way and connecting with peers who share similar interests can transform pharmacy from an abstract career idea into a tangible possibility.

For students already leaning toward healthcare but unsure which path fits best, this camp provides concrete information to guide that decision. For those just beginning to explore options, it’s a great way to test the waters.
