Group gathers to award certificates of appreciation to Aramark and Wilkes

The Luzerne-Wyoming Counties Employment Coalition and the human services agency Step By Step visited the Henry Student Center to honor Wilkes University and campus food service partner Aramark for a job well done.

The organizations presented certificates of appreciation to recognize Aramark and Wilkes for promoting employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Aramark was recommended for the award because of its openness to inclusivity and commitment to a diverse population in its workforce.

At any given time, Aramark employs four to six people with developmental disabilities. These staff members each have a job coach to lend extra support. During their shifts, the employees are tasked with making sure that items like the napkin holders are filled and keeping tables, chairs and floors in the dining hall clean. In addition to keeping Henry’s looking great, they interact with students, faculty, staff and guests to be sure everyone who walks through the door feels welcome.

According to Patrick McGoff, general manager of food services, the arrangement is mutually beneficial. Aramark has dedicated employees they trust to come in and keep the dining hall clean, and the team members take pride in their work and enjoy interacting with the campus community.

While McGoff is proud to hang the certificate on the wall, employing individuals with developmental disabilities simply makes great business sense for Aramark and the Wilkes campus. “It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by Step By Step,” said McGoff. “Plus, it shows the Wilkes University value of inclusivity and giving opportunities to people who may not have opportunities elsewhere.”
