If you’re a high school student who is interested in a career in pharmacy, Wilkes University’s Nesbitt School of Pharmacy has the perfect summer camp for you: Discover Pharmacy Camp on Aug. 17 and 18, 2021.
Assistant professor of pharmacy practice Letitia N. Warunek, Pharm.D., BCPS, and a 2017 grad of the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, answers some frequently asked questions about the Discover Pharmacy camp:
Why should a student attend Discover Pharmacy Camp?
The Discover Pharmacy Camp at Wilkes University is a way for students to learn about the opportunities available in pharmacy. Students will spend time rotating through various hands-on activities that are led by current Wilkes University School of Pharmacy faculty. In addition, students will also have opportunities to interact with current pharmacy students who will be helping with many of the activities. These activities will take place within our pharmacy classrooms and laboratories, so students will be able to experience what it’s like as a college student on campus.
What will students get out of the camp? What will they learn/do?
The Discover Pharmacy Camp activities will introduce students to a variety of roles and responsibilities of a pharmacist. Some activities include learning how to counsel patients, training on how to manage drug overdoses using naloxone, pharmacy trivia, and a pharmacy-themed escape room. Students will also spend time in the compounding lab where they will have opportunities to prepare various products and examine the effects of different medication formulations.
Why should a student consider a career in pharmacy?
Students should consider a career in pharmacy because there are countless areas within pharmacy to choose from. Pharmacists work in the community, hospitals, doctor’s offices, insurance companies, drug companies, and public health, just to name a few. Pharmacy is an excellent career path for students who are interested in healthcare who want to build a career that suits their unique interests and passions.
Does a student need any special skills to attend the camp (ex: has to have taken STEM or science classes)?
Students do not need any special skills to attend the Discover Pharmacy Camp. Faculty and pharmacy students will guide students through each activity.
